Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team dropped a pair of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) games to 22nd-ranked UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon at the Wisconsin Rapids Sports Complex. The Pointers took the opener, 3-1, and the nightcap, 4-3.
UWL falls to 15-17 overall and 1-5 in the WIAC while UW-Stevens Point improves to 23-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Pointers are ranked 22nd on this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll.
UW-Stevens Point tallied single runs in the second, third and fourth innings in Saturday's opener. Rachel Baker and Allie Meyers had back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the second for the game's first run. In the third, JesseKlicker doubled with one out and came in on Sara Traxel's RBI single for a 2-0 lead. Sawyer Holberg's RBI single in the fourth gave UW-Stevens Point a 3-0 lead knocking in Sophia Heckendorf with an unearned run.
UWL cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth. Cristin Casey singled with one out and advanced to second on wild pitch. Kyra Lard followed with an RBI double to score Casey.
Remington Stark (7-3) suffered the loss, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out one. Carmen Follette went 2.0 innings, recording two strikeouts. Casey, Lard and Jordyn McCormack each had a hit for the Eagles.
Morgan Harwood (8-1) picked up the win for UW-Stevens Point. She pitched 6.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run and one walk while striking out six. Ashley Zygowski earned her ninth save, going 1.0 inning with one strikeout. Five different players recorded a hit for the Pointers.
In the nightcap, both teams scored a run in the first inning. Lard drew a two-out walk in the top of the first and scored on McCormack's double for UWL. Klicker hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first for UW-Stevens Point to tie the game.
UWL took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, but UW-Stevens Point tallied three times in the bottom half of the inning. Lard's solo home run gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Klicker hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning for the Pointers to make it 3-2 and Kaitlyn Roberts' solo home run for back-to-back home runs gave UW-Stevens Point a 4-2 lead.
The Eagles cut it to 4-3 in the sixth as Lard singled and went to second on McCormack's ground out. After Abbey Bosch and Anna Jensen drew walks to load the bases, Lindsay Steien's RBI ground out scored Lard to make it a one-run game, but UWL left two runners on base to end the inning. Casey and Lard had two-out singles in the top of the seventh, but both runners were stranded to end the contest.
Follette (0-4) took the loss in the second game, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing two hits and three runs (two earned) with two strikeouts. Elise Weinzierl pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and one run while strikingout eight. UWL finished with seven hits as Lard went 3-for-3 with three runs.
Zygowski (8-1) earned the win for UW-Stevens Point, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing one hit, one run and three walks. Harwood picked up her first save, going 1.2 innings, allowing two hits while striking out two.
UWL returns to action Tuesday, April 23 with a WIAC doubleheader at UW-River Falls at 2 p.m.
