COLLEGE PARK, MD — The University of Maryland volleyball team (13-5, 3-3 B1G) continues its non-conference schedule with a midwest trip to face Northwestern (8-8, 2-4 B1G) Friday night and top-ranked Wisconsin (15-0, 6-0 B1G) Sunday afternoon. Through six conference matches, Maryland is off to its best start to Big Ten play since 2018.

Friday's match against the Wildcats will take place inside Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, IL, while Sunday afternoon's showdown will be contested in the confines of the UW Field House in Madison, WI. Both matches will be streamed on B1G+.

Down Go The Gophers!

  • On Friday night, Maryland picked up its biggest win of the 2023 season with its first ranked victory of the campaign over No. 16 Minnesota. The triumph also marks the first time the Terps have knocked off the Golden Gophers in 19 contests.
  • Maryland came out on fire in the opening set, holding the lead for the entire frame thanks to seven kills from Sam Csire and a team hitting percentage of .321.
  • Minnesota rebounded to take the next two sets, though Maryland forced a deuce set in the third stanza after trailing 19-10 at one point, reawakening to finish the set on a 14-7 run though it lost 26-24.
  • The Terps overcame a 2-1 set deficit, utilizing four blocks and three service aces to take the fourth set, 25-21.
  • Maryland and Minnesota were locked in a tight battle for most of the deciding set, but a 4-0 run punctuated by a Lilly Gunter service ace put Maryland up 13-9, where the Terps were able to close out the frame.

The Terps celebrated their first win over Minnesota, as they knocked off the No. 16 Golden Gophers Friday night inCollege Park with a five-set victory.

  • Senior outside hitter Sam Csire put up one of the best performances of her career on the big stage in Friday's upset win over No. 16 Minnesota.
  • Csire put up a season-best 20 kills on a .232 hitting percentage, putting up the fourth 20-kill performance of her collegiate career and the most putaways by a Terp this season.
  • Additionally, Csire added on seven digs, three total blocks and a pair of service aces as Maryland downed the Golden Gophers for the first time in program history.
  • For her performance, the Strongsville, OH native was named the Solomon Eye Physicians & Surgeons Terp of the Week Monday.
  • Csire leads the team with 173 kills while on pace to hit a career-best .180 while she continues to climb the leaderboard for most career kills at Maryland.

A-Russ Does It All

  • Redshirt senior middle blocker Anastasia Russ has shone as one the most efficient hitters in the country and one of the most potent blockers in the conference as the halfway point of the schedule nears.
  • Russ' blocking prowess was on display two weekends ago against Michigan, as she racked up a season-high nine total blocks. She currently ranks sixth in the Big Ten and 74th in the country with 1.20 blocks per set.
  • On offense, Russ possesses the second-best hitting percentage in the Big Ten and 15th-best in theNCAA with a .428 clip, recording 97 kills against just 17 errors on 187 attacks.
  • In a season and a half at Maryland, the Pittsburgh, PA product currently owns a .355 career hitting percentage, the highest in program history.

Anastasia Russ led the Terps offense with 11 kills Saturday against Indiana for her third double-digit kill outing of the season.

New Kid On The Rohr-Block

  • Eva Rohrbach has starred as one of the top freshmen in the country this season, as her offensive and defensive numbers stack up with the best among first-year players.
  • The middle blocker has been one of the most efficient hitters in the nation, as her .389 hitting clip ranks second among all freshmen and 38th in the country. Additionally, she has recorded double-digit kills in four matches this season.
  • On the defensive side, Rohrbach is second on the Terps with 1.25 blocks per set, the fourth-highest freshman rate in the country. The San Diego, CA star has recorded five or more blocks in seven matches this season.

Double-Double Dowler

  • Just a week after recording her first double-double of 2023, senior setter Sydney Dowler came up big against No. 16 Minnesota for her second double-double of the season.
  • In the five-set win over the Golden Gophers, Dowler racked up 38 assists while picking up a season-high 14 digs to guide the Terps to their first-ever win over Minnesota.
  • Dowler notched her first double-double of the season nine nights prior against Rutgers, when she dished out 40 assists (10 assists/set) and picked up 11 digs.
  • In her senior season, the Oconomowoc, WI native sits at fourth in the Big Ten with 9.55 assists per set and second in the conference with 592 total assists this season.
  • The Sept. 5 Big Ten Setter of the Week is also on pace to become the sixth Terp in program history to record 3,000 career assists, as her total through three-plus years in College Park sits at 2,921 entering the weekend.

A Balanced Bunch

  • Maryland's offensive efficiency has not been powered by one dominant force, but rather the contributions of a balanced offensive unit.
  • Six different Terps have multiple matches with double-digit kills in just 15 contests, led by senior outside hitter Sam Csire, who has seven such matches on the campaign.
  • Any offensive player on the Maryland roster can step up and lead the offense, as shown by the seven different players who have led the team in kills in a match this year.
  • The Terps have had at least two players reach double-digit kills in seven matches and at least three double-digit killers in five.
  • Additionally, for the first time in Adam Hughes' stint as head coach, Maryland had a match with four different Terps with double-digit kills against Utah Valley on Sept. 2 and a match with five different players who reached 10 kills against Coastal Carolina on Sept. 8.

  • Former NCAA Men's Volleyball National Champion and NCAA Most Outstanding Player Ryan Ammerman joined the Maryland volleyball coaching staff in May 2023.
  • Ammerman joins the Terps' coaching staff after spending the 2022-23 season as an assistant coach for his alma mater, UC Irvine, coaching the men's team to the Big West Tournament title game.

Scouting The Wildcats

  • After an 18-14 record in 2022 for the best season in the seven-year head coaching tenure of Shane Davis, Northwestern enters the weekend with an 8-8 overall record and a 2-4 Big Ten standing.

  • It has been 382 days and counting since the No. 1 team in the country has lost to a Big Ten team, as the 2021 NCAA National Champions have not missed a beat since winning the program's first national championship two seasons ago.
  • After starting out the season ranked No. 2, the Badgers claimed the pole position after the first weekend and have maintained a hold on the spot ever since.
  • In non-conference play, Wisconsin faced adversity with a trio of contests that went the distance. Against No. 21 Arkansas, the Razorbacks nearly came back from a 2-1 set deficit to win, and in a home match against No. 24 Tennessee, the Volunteers almost pulled off a reverse sweep.
  • In Wisconsin's biggest test of the season against No. 3 Florida, Wisconsin fell behind 2-0 in Gainesville, but roared back for a thrilling reverse sweep victory.
  • It has been smooth sailing for Wisconsin since the Big Ten slate began in late September, as the Badgers have not lost a set while increasing their conference winning streak to 25 matches.
