How hard is it to get a women's volleyball scholarship? ›

Even for student-athletes that play volleyball very well, competition for college-level scholarships is fierce. Out of the thousands of high school students that play volleyball for their school teams or clubs, only 1% will actually secure a spot on an NCAA Division I college team.

NCAA D1 women's volleyball allows a maximum of 12 scholarships per team. NCAA D2 men's volleyball allows a maximum of 4.5 scholarships per team. NCAA D2 women's volleyball allows a maximum of 8 scholarships per team. NCAA D3 does not give out athletic scholarships - as is the case across all sports.

Which means all scholarship athletes on a D1 volleyball team have a full ride to that school. The rest of the athletes on the team are considered walk-ons, or athletes who don't receive any athletic scholarship money to play their sport.

The NCAA's five-year rule stipulates that a student-athlete cannot compete in any one D1 college sport for more than four seasons. These four seasons must fall within a period of five calendar years. That said, the NCAA can grant exceptions.

In general, if you are super athletic and you can jump out of the gym, you should be fine. One of the better players I ever had as a coach was a 5′2 outside hitter who could touch just under 9 feet. I saw a picture of her blocking side-by-side with our 5′11 middle and their hands were exactly equal.

Being a preferred walk-on is the highest status a recruit can get outside of receiving an athletic scholarship.
